Recent Communication Alum Myke Scaffidi received two awards at the Broadcast Education Association's 2012 Festival of Media Arts; first in the Commercial/Promo/PSA category and third in the Educational Program/Documentary category.

Appalachian State's Communication Department has been well-represented in BEA competititons. In five years of entering the Commercial Category, ASU has taken first each year as well as several second and third place and honorable mention awards. In six years of entering the Educational Program/Documentary program, ASU has won or placed each year. In addition, ASU has earned one "Best of Festival" Award. Including Scaffidi's recent win, ASU Communication Audio I and Audio II students have won 23 national awards in six years.
